History of the Hacienda Riquelme
Since the eighteenth century large rainfed farms have been created in the vast plain between the Puerto de la Cadena and the Mar Menor, where small towns were rising around rural-type buildings dedicated to cover the services and farm production. One of these unique properties is the Hacienda Riquelme. Probably built in that time and the current structure traced to 1857.
The farm follows the lines of the great Roman farm buildings, designed around a large rectangular courtyard, which was used as the homes of workers, the corrals, stables for livestock, grain storage, tools, the mill and the main mansion belonging to the estate owners -in this case the Riquelme family - which was extended and completed in accordance with their needs and undergoing profound transformation up to the early twentieth century. The additions in the early twentieth century include the top floor of the palace and the central tower which houses the two coats of arms.
Besides its architecture -rated with grade 2 for its artistic and historical interest - the garden of Riqueleme also stands out, planted with palm trees and Mediterranean planting, which is accessed by two locked doors. The hydraulic system of collecting water from the farm, with canals and a reservoir that covered the needs of the inhabitants of the mansion and animals was also implemented.
The Hacienda Riquelme Resort started in 2004 - is structured around this mansion that comprehensively rehabilitated to become the social center of the complex. The project involved different architects initially and after Javier Fernández Iván Martínez, concluding in a definitive written by José Manuel Chacón. It retained many original features together with s its central courtyard. The restoration has retained all the elements that gave it its physical uniqueness. Additionally, all secondary buildings have been maintained and restored - including the mill and the main mansion.
With a total area of 2,122 m2 building restored the estate is utilised to make it the Club House, welcoming shop and pro shop, locker rooms, toilets and local supermarket. While the main mansion houses cafe bar and restaurant that serve both golfers and residents and visitors.
Imagine it all the interior layout has been restored while the structure and facades have been restored - the woodwork upgraded and the trusses and staircase restored. All of the best elemebts have been retained and the character retained.
The same can be said for the outside space, especially the courtyard and access that help to highlight the value of the building.
And all this gas been done through a restoration that has been especially respectful of what already exists and with which Polaris World has managed to recover. At the same time they have provided a large rural construction area which offers future opportunies for its residents and visitors.
